6 Keys to Eating Healthy in Restaurants

Date:2007-06-27

If you are trying to lose weight and you are sticking to a diet plan, then you have to remember that it is best if you prepare your own foods. However, there will always be a time when your spouse or family wants to eat out at fancy restaurants. Did you know that an entire full course meal at a restaurant can be comprised of more than a thousand calories? It’s best to avoid eating out entirely but many times that is not possible. So, how can you manage to eat out and still maintain your diet?

With the following tips, you can eat out and still stick to your diet:

1. Leave out the appetizer. Appetizers are known to contain a lot of calories, so it would be better for you to leave this one out. Many times these foods are fried, which is definitely a diet no no. Plus, the sauces for these are heavily laden with calories.

2. Do not skip your salad. Your salad is one course which you should not leave out. In fact, it would be better if you do not leave any food on your plate, since it is guaranteed to be healthy. Be sure to pick a dressing which is made from olive oil and vinegar, and stay away from the cheese. Usually, the salads in restaurants are comprised of raw vegetables and fruits. With this, you are assured of lesser calories and more nutrients. Plus, you will be able to take in anti-oxidants, which ensures the health of your heart.

3. Pick out an entree which suits your diet plan. When choosing entrees, opt for those which are grilled or broiled. This will help you lessen your intake of calories and extra fats. You can also have two portion servings of vegetables. When you ask for sauce, opt for one which is made out from tomatoes. Not only are these good for the heart, they also contain less calories.

4. Your drinks should also be healthy. Stay away from alcoholic beverages. Ask if the restaurant uses sweeteners, which do not have calories, in their iced tea. If they use sweeteners, then you might want to opt for iced tea. As always, water with lemon is the best choice.

5. Limit your intake of sweets. It would be best to skip the dessert, but if you are dying to try out the restaurant's desserts, ask if they have something that is low fat. Watch the portions and if possible, share it with someone.

6. Control portions of each meal. American restaurants tend to serve very hearty portions, which has helped our nation get to where it is today in regards to its weight problem. Just because a restaurant gives you a huge plate of food, it doesn’t mean that you have to finish it. Listen to your gut. If you’ve had enough, stop!

Sticking to a diet is a tough task, especially when you are at a restaurant. With a little knowledge and willpower, you can experience the joy of eating out while staying within the limits of your diet.
