Social Obligation

It was a very pleasant day with a cool breeze blowing around. The folks at the cafeteria were enjoying the weather, coffee and the conversation about the social club activities of the company.

Looking at the notice board on the social club activity, Asish started to say “It is part of our obligation to the society to take some steps to improve the situation of those who are underprivileged, neglected, hungry and homeless”. He is an active member of the club and is committed his spare time to work with spastic children.

Maha strongly believes in the sayings of Gandhiji that “The education to a society is a great service to the nation and society as a whole”. She is a part of the IT professionals who are running a transition school for children who tend to drop out as they have to travel with their parents to work in the fields. Their objective is to get more children from the village into school, thereby doing their bit to enhance literacy levels

Harish had never failed to make a contribution from his salary every month to some charity organization or the other. He always ensures that the first amount he spends from his salary every month would be a charity. This is a practice which he has cultivated for the past 5 years right from the day he got his first salary.

Amit has cultivated a habit of visiting the near-by orphanage at least once a month. He takes his daughter and son along with him and they play various games with the orphanage children. They also distribute some snacks at the end.

Kanchan does an innovative job every year when the school academic session begins. Sometimes, she would choose to give geometry boxes or school bags to the under privileged children in the near by schools. She had also paid the fees for about 10 children a year. She had got a couple of shoes a year, few uniforms an other year etc.

Vikram would ride, run and walk for charitable cause. He said commenting about an event which had taken place the previous week end, "The number of participants this year was nearly five times that of our first year. It's wonderful to see such an improvement in such a short span.”

Mohit and Leena go to an under-privileged school near their place every Saturday. They could get few second-hand computers for the school. Also, they teach on the usage of Word, Excel etc. to the staff and students. They have also developed few programs which help the school authorities to get an idea about the donations received, current strength, and the stationary needs of the school.

John Xavier participates in raising money and creating awareness for any life-threatening issues like Greenpeace organization or AIDS awareness campaign. This activity is very important to the community and being a part of such awareness campaigns, you help to protect both environment and community.

These young professionals say they are investing time, energy, money and knowledge and in return what they get is unbridled affection and satisfaction on their contribution to the society.

This demonstrates that whatever little you do, can make a difference to the lives of the less fortunate. You too can make a difference. If not in a very big way, even small steps would be fine. There are many areas where you could offer your service to the society.
